How to Prepare for a Career Change

December 11th, 2019 Written by: Masterson Staffing Solutions

For most of us, making a significant change in their life – especially a career change – can be an overwhelming process. If the passion that is pushing you towards moving on is strong, it is probably time to take a step in a different direction. Read on to learn how you can achieve a smoother transition into your new career.

Identify Why You Want to Switch Careers

There should be an important reason for wanting to change your career completely. Make sure you understand why you plan to do it. Feeling stuck or lacking motivation are entirely valid reasons. Perhaps you’ve learned that you don’t care for the 9 to 5 life after all. Changing careers isn’t always an easy process. Your interviewer may inquire about your interest in changing paths or leaving your current position. That’s why it is important that you’ve nailed your reasoning down well enough to articulate it to future employers.

Translate Your Skills

Before you change careers, you might want to pursue acquiring new talents or hobbies. You could do freelance work or land a general side gig. This will help show that you’re well-versed in multiple disciplines and, in general, more flexible. This can be extremely valuable. It helps reinforce your adaptability and allows an employer to see the value in your professional and personal experience across different industries or disciplines.

Perfect Your Resume

The first thing you need to do is to polish up your resume. You already have valuable experience regardless of the industry you’re in, so make sure to include it in your resume. Your resume should be tailored to the specific position you desire.

Certifications Are Important

While any type of experience is essential when making a career switch, some industries heavily value the degree of their candidates. If you’ve already completed four years of college, the idea of pursuing an additional formal education might be unsettling. However its important to understand that acquiring new certifications will help your resume stand out.
